Justice Darius Khobo of Kaduna State High Court has granted bail to Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife Zinat on health grounds.
This is following an earlier adjournment a week ago for the court to reach a decision on the bail application made by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN leader.
The judge in granting the application said that officials of the Kaduna State government should travel with them.
The Islamic leader and his wife applied for medical bail, citing poor health while in detention. He is to travel to India.
Counsel to the respondents, who is also the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Kaduna State, Mr. Dari Bayero opposed the bail.
There are indications that many influential persons, organisations in Nigeria and abroad may have intervened to broker a truce.
Agitations by members of IMN for the release of their leader have gone violent in recent times, leading to the death of a police chief, a youth corps member serving with Lagos-based Channels Television and many IMN members.
El-Zakzaky was arrested in 2015 following an altercation between his movement and the Army authorities.
