BREAKING: Presidential Election Petition Court Rejects Request For Live Telecast Of Proceedings

The Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Haruna Tsammani, has dismissed the application for live coverage of court proceedings.

At the proceeding in Abuja on Monday, Justice Tsammani said the application by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) lacked merit.

Atiku, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the request on May 7.

The Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, followed suit with a similar application asking that proceedings of the tribunal be televised.

The former vice president had said televising the proceedings will enhance public confidence.

The president-elect Bola Tinubu, his party, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) opposed the application.

Arguing the motion, Chris Uche, counsel for Atiku and the PDP, said: “There is no single legislative or statutory position against it.”

He said a live broadcast doesn’t necessarily mean the faces of the justices would be shown.
