Former Bauchi Speaker Damina, Others Threatened For Visiting Buhari

Bauchi Assembly of Youths Political Actors (BAYOPA) and Body of Bauchi Lawyers of Conscience (BOBALAC) have promised to begin recall process against the former speaker Bauchi State House of Assembly, Kawuwa Damina and 16 other lawmakers after paying a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

To underscore their seriousness, the groups have handed down seven days ultimatum to the former speaker and the 16 aggrieved lawmakers to rescind their latest decision on the leadership tussle or face recall.

Bauchi State House of Assembly was thrown into crisis on June 20, 2019 when members -elect held parallel inauguration leading to the emergence of two Speakers .

Factional Speaker, Kawuwa Damina and16 other members later succumbed to pressure from stakeholders and were inaugurated in a special session presided over by the Deputy Speaker Danlami Kawule of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

However, the narrative changed when Damina and his members, led by the All Progressive Congress, APC, national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole briefed president Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on events leading to the crisis in the House.

In reaction, the president informed them that he will work with the relevant constitutional bodies to resolve the crises rocking the Houses of Assembly in Bauchi and Edo states.

But addressing journalists at a press conference in Bauchi on Monday, Coordinator of BAYOPA, Hashim Bala Pali said “though they are satisfied with the stand taken by President Muhammadu Buhari to be guided by the letter and spirit of the constitution and the law on the issue but condemn in the strongest possible terms the laughable, unfortunate, unreasonable, anti-people, Anti-democratic decision by some of the much-thought repentant members of the 9th assembly in Bauchi state led by Kawuwa Shehu Damina representing Darazo Central Constituency in renouncing what they had earlier freely, and of their own volition submitted themselves to, resulting in their inauguration on Friday 2nd August, 2019?” The groups asked.

“It is therefore against the background of the foregoing that we are using this avenue to serve a 7 days warning on the Misguided, Faction Must Exist Members of the 9th Assembly in Bauchi State to once and for all rescind their latest decision on the issue, failing which we shall proceed with recall process against them.”

According to them, “as far as we are concerned, Mr Damina and his sponsors, Adams Oshiomhole and the former Governor M.A Abubakar cannot be serious on this issue. In fact, their respect to the person and office of Mr President as well as the generality of the people of Bauchi state is not only seriously questionable but it is glaringly very low.”

The groups said that, “one would expect them to properly brief Mr President that based on the wish of their people, based on the reality of the matter coupled with the legal position both in terms of the subsisting court order as well as the fact of their inauguration, the issue is over for good but unfortunately, and as guests of the President last Wednesday, they went and presented a rather defeatist, self-serving and democratically dangerous position to him as far as the interest of Bauchi state is concerned”

The group further alleged that both the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) , Adams Oshiomhole and former Speaker Bauchi State House of Assembly, Damina who spoke to journalists after meeting with the President spoke from the two sides of their mouths.

“Or, as it is known in legal parlance, they were trying to blow hot and cold at the same time. By the God’s special grace, they will continue to fail woefully in their anti-Bauchi state agenda.”
