Just In: Kogi Moves To Impeach Deputy Governor Achuba

The Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday began the process of impeaching the Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba.

The impeachment notice was read as a petition on the floor of the Assembly by the Majority Leader of the Assembly and member representing Ajaokuta on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Bello.

The petition was based on three grounds of criminal negligence, financial misappropriation and non-performance.

Bello, who said 21 of the 25 lawmakers signed the petition, added that the allegations, actions and utterances of the Deputy Governor amounted to gross misconduct.

He cited Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution and prayed the Assembly to commence investigation towards Achuba’s impeachment.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Kolawole Matthew, acceded to the prayers in the petition and directed that the petition be served on the Deputy Governor for him to respond within the 14 days allowed by the Constitution.

Achuba and his principal, Governor Yahya Bello have been at loggerheads over unpaid salaries and other benefits, leading to the former accusing the latter of plotting to kill him, an allegation that the latter has denied.
